What is Wheaties Academy?

2018 Schedule

This innovative grassroots leadership program provides dedicated community members across generations and geographies with the inspiration and the skills to turn ideas into action... from the ground up. With support from mentors [Wheaties graduates] and other community members, participants work together and learn how to creatively address challenges in Wheat Ridge by focusing on possibilities. We find inspiration in "Love Where You Live" by Peter Kageyama and use the Orton Family Foundation's Community Heart & Soul [TM] process to guide best practices.

Over the course of five months, each Wheatie will:

  • Develop a Civic Action Plan in support of a local interest

  • Complete a community project

  • Deepen their understanding of our community

  • Expand connections with civic leaders

  • Create strong relationships with other Wheaties for an action-capable peer group.

The academy runs January 23 through June 21, 2018. Participants are expected to attend all 6 sessions, #WheatiesLove happy hour, and the overnight retreat. In addition to readings and assignments, participants work together between sessions on activities including the community project. Plan on 10 to 15 hours a month.

The cost to participate is $300. This includes meals, materials and lodging. If you would like to participate but cannot afford the tuition, please let us know by checking the box at the end of the application. Limited financial assistance is available for qualifying participants and does not impact eligibility or application status.

Wheaties Academy is a program of Localworks, a community-based, non-profit development corporation advancing Wheat Ridge as a vibrant and sustainable community. Click HERE for more information on Localworks.
